Studies suggest that as a species we're particularly inept at assessing risk.

We carefully weigh options, minutely examine battalions of statistics, look left, logically re-assess, tally up, look right, then quietly don our brown shirts and jump in line with the ranked herd, having been given the gentlest of nudges by some barely detectable electrical impulses in a dark, imperfectly mapped region of our brains having nothing to do with "rational thought".
